Divergent color palettes

Multi-hue color palettes for divergent data

Reference the color overview for additional palettes to encode data differently.

Use divergent to encode continuous data with meaningful opposing extremes and a midpoint in between for the purpose of identifying patterns.

Examples are:

  • Good/Bad
  • Danger-Warning-Safe
  • Red-Amber-Green
  • Hot-Medium-Cold
  • Full/Empty
  • etc.

There are several small and large diverging color palettes. Use large diverging color palettes for data sets with more than 6 classes:

  • Choropleth map
  • Heatmap
  • Semi dial gauge

Use a subset or the full small diverging color palettes with up to 6 classes for:

  • Arch gauge
  • Arch speedometer
  • Choropleth map
  • Full dial gauge
  • Heatmap
  • Semi dial gauge
  • Semi gauge
  • Sparklines
  • Stacked area graph, percentage
  • Stacked bar chart, percentage
  • Stacked column chart, percentage
  • Waterfall chart

TIP: Use the individual colors of a small divergent palette as method for conditional formatting. Following visualization methods are suitable candidates:

  • Arch gauge
  • Bar chart
  • Bubble plot
  • Column chart
  • Full dial gauge
  • Semi dial gauge
