Multi-hue color palettes for continuous data

Multi-hue color palettes for continuous data

Reference the colors overview for additional palettes.

Multi-hued palettes are similar to single-hue palettes in that sense that they can be used for encoding continuous or temperature-like data. Unlike the Pega single hue palettes, multi-hue palettes are not based on the Pega categorical color palette, but instead they use colors inspired by the Viridis palettes often used in data science projects. While the single hue palettes work for people with color vision deficiencies, the single-hue palettes are easier to read for this audience.

Examples for the use of continuous color palettes are:

  • Temperature
  • rainfall
  • heat
  • revenue
  • binning data

Use sequential multi-hued color palettes with the following visualization methods:

  • Area graph
  • Bar chart
  • Bubble plot
  • Clustered bar chart
  • Clustered column chart
  • Choropleth map
  • Donut chart
  • Funnel chart
  • Heatmap
  • Line plot
  • Pie chart
  • Stacked area graph
  • Stacked area graph, percentage
  • Stacked bar chart
  • Stacked bar chart, percentage
  • Stacked column chart
  • Stacked column chart, percentage
Multi-hue palettes can be used for encoding data sets with up to 10 classes. Charts that encode data using one single color (1 variable) must use the first color of the Pega 10 categorical palette.
